Best Food For Yorkies

The Yorkshire Terrier has long been a favorite pooch of ours, not only because of his pint-size frame but because he is also a feisty and fun pup. In 2020, the American Kennel Club have ranked him as the 10th most popular dog breed in America, but it might come as a surprise to learn that almost 90% of all dog owners aren’t clued up about their pooch’s nutritional needs. This means that there are a lot of Yorkshire Terriers out there who are simply not getting the right nutrition, and this is why we have compiled this comprehensive guide and recommended the very best dog food for Yorkies so you can ensure your pup is getting the nutrients it needs.

The Association of American Food Control Officials (AAFCO) have set out specific guidelines for all pet food, and all of our recommendations for the Yorkshire Terrier are AAFCO compliant. They are also all made by well-known and trusted brands, so we only recommend kibbles that work! Not only will we talk you through each of his life stages and what nutrition he requires, but we will also recommend products based on this research.

Nearly all Veterinarians and canine nutritionists agree that dry natural kibble is the best form of nutrition for dogs, particularly smaller breeds, as they are full to the brim of vitamins and minerals that cannot be found in raw meat alone, but also because they help to break down the buildup of plaque that causes havoc in a Yorkshire Terriers little mouth. So, without further ado, let’s jump into the world of Yorkshire Terrier nutrition.

At a Glance: Our Favorite Foods for Yorkshire Terriers

Nutrients For Yorkie Puppies

Despite being one of the smallest toy breeds in (and yes they have a Micro version) the world he has just as many nutritional needs as a much larger dog, albeit different ones. All puppies need a lot of protein, energy and fat in order for them to fully develop into a healthy adult. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual small breed puppies need a kibble that provide them with a minimum protein content of 22% and a minimum fat content of 8%, and this is also recommended by AAFCO. This will all be found in kibbles specifically designed for small breed puppies, so do not feed him anything else.

Like many toy breeds their little bodies often struggle to regulate their blood sugar levels, particularly when they are puppies. For this reason, it is advised that you free feed your Yorkie puppy to ensure that he has access to the energy and nutrients as and when he feels he needs it.

A blend of vitamins and minerals should also be found in the ingredients list as they will help to build up his immune system, as well as ensuring that his coat and skin are luxurious and silky. Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), which is found in mothers’ milk, is also important as this supports healthy brain and eye development.

Nutrients for Adult Yorkies

At the age of 12 months, the Yorkshire Terrier will be fully developed, and now his nutritional focus should be about maintaining his muscle mass, enough healthy carbohydrates to keep him energized throughout the day, and antioxidants to keep his immune system strong. His beautiful silky coat will need plenty of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to nourish his skin and hair, and all of these can be found in adult formulas for small breeds.

The MSD Veterinary Manual advises that small breed adults need a kibble that provides them with a minimum protein content of 18% and a minimum fat content of 5%, and again, this is supported by AAFCO. Because the Yorkie had a long coat it is important to look for kibbles that provide an abundance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to maintain his locks. Now that his body is better able to regulate his blood sugar levels, he should now be fed his daily food allowance across 3 meals a day as part of a feeding routine.

Nutrients For Senior Yorkies

The Yorkshire Terrier is considered to be a senior between the ages of 8 and 10 years, much later than larger breeds simply because his life expectancy is much longer. It varies between Yorkies, so if you are not sure when to transition him to senior food ask your Veterinarian for tailored advice.

It is important to maintain his lean muscles with lean protein sources, however, another main focus when it comes to senior nutrition is increased glucosamine and chondroitin which helps to support his aging bones and joints. Vitamins and minerals are also crucial to support his weakening immune system so that he can fight off infections and diseases.

Because he will become less active as he ages, he also needs much less energy, and as such there will be fewer calories per cup of kibble. The fat content will be much lower too as his digestive system can’t digest it as well as he once could.

Best Food for Yorkie Puppies

Top Food For Yorkshire Terrier Puppies
Yorkie Puppies have distinctly different food requirements from adults and seniors.

Yorkie puppies are really no different than any other breed at a young age.  They need very rich and nutrient-dense food that’s high in calories in order to support their growing bodies.  Because Yorkies are smaller in general, it doesn’t mean that you should be stingy with the food.

When shopping for a nutrient-dense food for your Yorkie pup, you should be looking at higher quality kibbles that meet the nutritional requirements as guided by the AAFCO.  Any of the puppy foods in our list below will help ensure your little pup is getting the right nutritional fulfillment at a reasonable cost.  Let’s look at our favorites for Yorkie puppies.

Best Food for Adult Yorkies

Top Foods For Yorkie Adults
As Yorkshire Terriers age, their nutritional requirements change.

Adult Yorkies will have different nutritional needs as they start to age.  Yorkies are somewhat active, but you’ll still want to monitor the food intake to make sure your adult doesn’t get overweight.  You’ll want to make sure you look at foods that have a good blend of Protein, Fats, Fiber, and calorie count to keep your adult Yorkie satisfied.

Below are our favorite adult kibbles, and when the time comes be sure to transition him to his new kibble slowly to avoid stomach upset.  Switching foods too quickly can cause your dog to have bowel issues, and that’s not fun for anyone to cleanup after.  It usually takes them a couple weeks to get used to the new food, so we recommend introducing it over time, and mixing it with the old brand as you transition your adult.

Best Food for Senior Yorkies

Senior Yorkie in Grass
As Yorkshire Terriers age, they become more sedentary and their food needs change.

Senior Yorkshire Terriers are known to start getting lazier with age.  These pups need to be monitored so that they aren’t getting overweight as they get older.  Because these pups can turn into couch potatoes, you’ll want to ensure that you pick foods that have lower calorie counts, or that you feed your pup less over time so that they don’t get too heavy for their little joints.  As your pup ages, they can also suffer from bad breath, so you may also want to consider foods that can combat that problem.

There are multiple brands that make formulas strictly for senior pups, and these are the formulas we’d recommend you stick to as it’s specifically meant for your aging Yorkshire Terrier or smaller breeds in general.  Picking a kibble that’s engineered for smaller dogs is preferred, so your senior doesn’t struggle eating a food that’s too large for their mouth as they grow older and have weakened joints/ligaments.  Let’s take a look at our favorite senior foods for your Yorkie.

Food for Overweight Yorkies

Food for Overweight Yorkies
Yorkies can also get overweight as they age, so you’ll want to monitor food intake closely.

Although he may be small, the Yorkshire Terrier can still get chunky if left to his own devices, and it is important that if he does start to pile on the pounds he is switched to a weight management kibble. Not only will the extra weight drain his energy, but it also creates a lot of health issues, so speak to your Veterinarian and take action!

Going on a lower calorie and less nutrient-dense diet can help your pup as they age, but it should also be combined with light exercise to truly maximize the benefits of the food.  Here are our favorite weight management kibbles for the Yorkie.

My yorkie is a 15 month old male. He is a very fussy eater, I have tried all kinds of dry dog food and he refuse to eat it. Right now he will only eat cooked chicken. What should I do?

Hi Debra! Thanks for taking the time to comment! Have you tried mixing chicken in with a dry kibble, or even testing a wet food as a topper? We did that with one of our pups that's a picky eater, and that seemed to work. You can also try a different dog food. We actually have an article on our site you can search for that talks about foods for choosy pups. Good luck!
