The Chihuahua is a large dog in a small package. This balanced, graceful breed is similar to Terriers in demeanor, and they weigh no more than six pounds. Hailing from Mexico, these cute little “purse dogs” are one of the oldest breeds from the Americas, and have a long history that dates back to the ancient kingdoms of pre-Columbia.

Bolo-Chi: Bolognese Chihuahua Mix

Bolochi
This rare combination of a Bolognese and a Chihuahua makes a Bolochi.

A unique breed that crosses the well-known Chihuahua with the not-so-popular Bolognese makes the Bolo-Chi. The biggest issue you’ll come across is finding the breed, as there currently aren’t many reputable breeders that sell this dog in the US.

Both parent breeds are toys explicitly bred for companionship, so if you live in a small house or apartment, they’ll fit in nicely. The Chihuahua side of the Bolo-Chi doesn’t like strangers very much, but the Bolognese does – so the friendliness of yours may go either way.

Despite this, they are very affectionate and get along with the owner of their family. The Bolo-Chi are also hypoallergenic dogs, so this breed is especially suitable for anyone with allergies.

Boxachi: Boxer Chihuahua Mix

Boxachi
The Boxachi mixes the Boxer with the Chihuahua.

The Boxachi is a relatively new breed that hasn’t garnered the popularity of some of the others on this list. There isn’t a significant amount of information on them yet, but they commonly share traits equally between both parents.

Boxers are often playful and curious, while the Chihuahua is sassy and smart – this mix comes together to make a cute toy-sized boxer that looks like a stuffed animal! There are multiple size variances between each Boxachi, with the range being between 6 pounds and 40 pounds.

A significant positive of this breed is that they are often very healthy, as both parents are ancient breeds of dogs that have been around for centuries.

Cheagle: Beagle Chihuahua Mix

Cheagle
A Cheagle mixes a Chihuahua with a Beagle.

One of the more popular hybrids, half Beagle half Chihuahua mix combines the best traits from both parents. They’re friendly and loving, yet still as bold as their Chihuahua parents.

Cheagles have a lot of energy! Playing fetch is one of their favorite things to do, and yet they don’t require a lot of exercise. They don’t need a lot of grooming either but be aware that they are prone to heart problems and eye disorders. Also, they don’t make good hunting and tracking dogs despite the Beagle mix because they’re so small, however, they will be great lap dogs and lifelong companions.

Chi Apso: Lhasa Apso Chihuahua Mix

Chi Apso
The Chi Apso mixes a Chihuahua and a Lhasa Apso.

Chi Apsos are an interesting mix of the Chihuahua and the Lhasa Apso. These sweeties make a great companions for practically anyone. Their loyal and playful nature will brighten up any home.

One of the most interesting facts about their parent, the Lhasa Apso, was that they were originally bred as watchdogs for Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. They were bred for this reason because of their small compact size and loud bark. The Chi Apso isn’t as small as their Chihuahua parents, but still, only weighs 10-20 pounds. Their long, double coat needs to be groomed weekly to avoid clumping.

Chi Chon: Bichon Frise Chihuahua Mix

Bichon Frise Chihuahua
Mixing a Bichon Frise and Chihuahua results in a Chi Chon.

These beautiful dogs are a mix between the Bichon Frise and the Chihuahua. They’re adorable designer dogs that have super fluffy coats and big round eyes. These pups are so tiny that they can be picked up with one hand and put into a bag. They’re also gentle, sweet, good-natured, and never aggressive. With such a cheerful and optimistic demeanor, they play well with children.

Their only real negative is their barking, but they’re only barking to get your attention. Chi Chons require little grooming and are low shredders and are even classified as hypoallergenic. These dogs are a great fit for almost anyone.

Chi-Poo: Toy Poodle Chihuahua Mix

Chihuahua Poodle
The Chi-Poo mixes the Chihuahua and the Poodle, making a tiny fluffy friend!

This cute little designer dog combines the most popular toy dog breeds: the Poodle and the Chihuahua. They require little maintenance and are great with people and children. Chi-Poos are fantastic for anyone with a busy lifestyle as these pups don’t mind being left alone. These generally, social dogs will sit patiently for long hours if you travel frequently.

These highly energetic dogs need very little exercise, so a short walk around the neighborhood will be enough. Highly adaptable and can fit into large families or small, tiny apartments, or a mansion. Just give them your attention, and they’ll be happy.

Chi-Spaniel: Cocker Spaniel Chihuahua Mix

Chi-spaniel
The Chi-Spaniel mixes the Chihuahua with a Cocker Spaniel.

Known for being quiet and less of a barker, the Chi-Spaniel combines the calm demeanor of the Cocker Spaniel with the energy and sweetness of the Chihuahua. These friendly dogs like to think they can sit on your lap when they’re often too big to. It is often asked what is the calmest Chihuahua mix, and the Chi-Spaniel is likely a good answer.

Due to this, they are great with children and other animals and make great family pets. They’re also very adaptable to most living conditions, including small apartments or homes with or without yards.

This doesn’t mean they don’t like to run! They do need some exercise, and taking them out once per day is essential to keep them happy. Color depends on what their parents look like, and will take from one or the other.

Chimation: Dalmatian Chihuahua Mix

Dalmatian Chihuahua Mix
Spotting a Chimation means you’ve come across a Chihuahua Dalmatian mix.

This hybrid is quite rare despite their parents, the Dalmatian and Chihuahua being popular breeds. Although this breed isn’t well documented, the Chimation is known for receiving a mix of traits from both parents.

The Chimation lost the hunting and working instincts of the Dalmatian and have now become a companion breed similar to the Chihuahua. You can still expect them to be loyal to family and affectionate.

Keep in mind that they have a low tolerance for strangers and younger children, so proper socialization is vital to unlearn this bad habit. The Chimation is a lot taller than the other mixed breeds on the list and sits at medium height.

Chin-Wa: Japanese Chin Chihuahua Mix

Chinwa
The Chin-Wa mixes the Japanese Chin and the Chihuahua, another international combination!

The combination of the Japanese Chin and the Chihuahua makes for the cutest little companion. The Chin-Wa is super social and loves to be the center of attention. The toy breed comes in a variety of colors, including cream, brown, grey, black, red, and white. Their fur doesn’t require a lot of maintenance; however, a single brush per week is more than enough to keep their coat shiny.

The look of each breed will vary, as some get their ears from the Chihuahua, and others from the Chin. They don’t need a lot of exercise and make perfect lap dogs. Just be aware that this mix is stubborn when it comes to training.

Chion: Papillon Chihuahua Mix

Papillion Chihuahua Mix
The Chion goes international by mixing the French Papillon and the Mexican Chihuahua.

Chions are a mix of two tiny dog breeds, the Papillon and the Chihuahua. This mix takes its intelligence from the Papillon parent, making them easy to train. They also tend to look more like the Papillon rather than their other parent.

It’s rare to find this breed any taller than 8 inches, and any heavier than 7 pounds. They fit nicely in a large pocket. Chions come in a wide range of hair lengths and coat colors: medium, long, straight, wavy, wiry, white, gold, brown, cream, tan, or black.

These tiny pups don’t do well with younger children despite their smaller size. They prefer the company of adults, but if you start socialization training with them early, they can get along with other pets and people. Chions are challenging to train because of their stubbornness, so some patience is required if you welcome them into your home.

Chipin: Miniature Pinscher Chihuahua Mix

Chihuahua Pin
A Miniature Pinscher and a Chihuahua would make a Chipin.

These small dogs are a mix of Miniature Pinschers and Chihuahuas. While only standing at 8-12 inches tall these petite pets have big personalities. The Chipin is very intelligent due to their Miniature Pinscher parent. This makes them fast learners that adapt well to most training methods. Their disposition makes them great for families with small children and other pets.

Chipins are low-maintenance and don’t require a lot of exercise or excessive grooming. Nutrition-wise, stick to a food that’s specifically made for the Chihuahua or the Mini-Pin. Their coat can get long, so as long as you keep it short, you won’t need to brush them often. As Chipins are territorial, it’s a good idea to socialize them at an early age.

Chizer: Miniature Schnauzer Chihuahua Mix

Mini Schnauzer Chihuahua Mix
When you mix a Miniature Schnauzer and a Chihuahua, you get a German-Mexican Chizer.

The Toy Schnauzer and the Chihuahua combine to produce the Chizer, an exciting mix of parents that hail from two different countries across the border. They’re a relatively new breed that has gained a lot of popularity over the years.

Small, and great lap dogs who love an excellent scratch behind the ear, the Chizer loves attention. However, they usually have a low tolerance towards children, so socializing them as early as possible will save you a huge headache later on. These hypoallergenic dogs are also heavy shedders, so brushing them a few times per week is necessary. Still, they’re fantastic dogs with easy-to-maintain coats.

Chug: Pug Chihuahua Mix

Chihuahua Pug Puppy
The Chug is a mix of Chihuahua and Pug.

The Chug is an exciting hybrid between the Chinese Pug and a Chihuahua. They usually keep the small figure of the Chihuahua while retaining the signature short-muzzled, wrinkly face. Chugs are fun and affectionate dogs who love people, but can be stubborn and independent and can be difficult to train if not socialized from birth.

Their coats require a lot of grooming, with emphasis on a lot. They’re heavy shedders and need daily brushing. If you can give them the care, obedience, and socialization that they need, you’ll have a great friend for life. They’re great with other pets and children.

The unique traits of the French Bulldog’s stubby limbs and the small stature of the Chihuahua are present in this breed. They also come in a wide range of colors, but you’ll often see them in black.

The Bullhuahuas taller, more muscled features and snarky attitude of the Chihuahua make the more assertive, yet confident. These dogs are very proud, loyal, easily trainable, and don’t require a lot of exercise or grooming.

Labrahuahua: Labrador Retriever Chihuahua Mix

Labrador Chihuahua Mix
Labrahuahua isn’t an incantation. It’s a mix between a Labrador Retriever and a Chihuahua.

This sweet and spicy breed is a unique cross between a Labrador Retriever and Chihuahua. The Labrahuahua takes after both parents by being incredibly intelligent, sassy, and people lovers.

They love children of any age as long as they give them plenty of affection. Seriously, these little guys need attention, but I’m sure that won’t be difficult to find for these cuties. Their size and features are a perfect mix of both parents.

Labahuahuas like to get plenty of exercise because they have so much energy. Overall, they are easy to care for, train, and groom. They make great companion pets as they are super affectionate.

Malchi: Chihuahua Maltese Mix

Malchi Dog
The Malchi is a mix between the Chihuahua and the Maltese.

The crossbreed of Maltese and Chihuahua is affectionately referred to as a “Malchi.” Malchis are full of energy and adore playful activities. They make wonderful companions for kids; however, their petite size means they should not be left unsupervised with younger children. These little bundles of joy are also quite sensitive and can become anxious if handled too roughly.

Chihuahuas are known for their feisty and bold nature. They aren’t shy about expressing their distress through vocalizations or even nipping. Similarly, Maltese dogs tend to be wary of strangers and can be quite vocal. Proper socialization and training are crucial for this breed to become friendly with both visitors and other animals. With the right guidance, they can exhibit excellent behavior and a warm, amiable demeanor. Despite their initial reservations with strangers, they are incredibly devoted and will always hold their owners in the highest regard.

Pomchi: Pomeranian Chihuahua Mix

Pomchi
The Pomchi is a mix of Pomeranian and Chihuahua.

The cross between a Pomeranian and Chihuahua is a concrete mix. Not only are they good-natured and affectionate, but they are also energetic while not being hyperactive. They are always willing to please but are capable of being independent. It’s no wonder they’re so popular.

Their cheerful attitudes make them a hit with children. Since they’re small, it’s a good idea to supervise your kids until they’re comfortable with the Pomchis size. A word of advice – don’t let them pull their tail!

Keep in mind that they can be possessive about their food and items and may get a little aggressive if they’re taken away. Other than that, they’re confident and alert little guys. Their stubbornness and watchdog-like qualities will pose as an excellent alarm system, as well as a loyal friend.

Ratcha: Rat Terrier Chihuahua Mix

Your Ratcha will range in size because of the wide span of his two parent breeds.

The “Ratcha” is a Rat Terrier Chihuahua blend. This easily-groomed pup shows tremendous bravado despite his small size. Your Ratcha will have a “terrier” mentality because not only is he half Terrier, but Chihuahuas also have a bit of a tough guy attitude. Even though they may not always willingly do what you ask, they always want to be with you. This cross creates a loving, independent-minded companion who needs a lot of attention and might suffer a little separation anxiety when left alone. This indomitable blend makes a great addition to a family with older children who understand that the little guys can’t play rough.

Scotchi: Scottish Terrier Chihuahua Mix

Scotch Terrier Chihuahua Mix
The adorable Scotchi is born when a Scottish Terrier is mixed with a Chihuahua.

This famous designer dog is a combination of the Scottish Terrier and Chihuahua. The Scotchi is one of those mixed breeds that is officially recognized by both the American Canine Hybrid Club and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Scotchi’s make great companion dogs, but often don’t get along well with small children. However, adequate training and socialization will help them adapt. They’re also small and sit at only 8-11 inches tall and weigh between 16-20 pounds.

Shi-Chi: Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix

Shichi
The Shi-Chi mixes the Shih Tzu and Chihuahua.

The Shi-Chi has risen in popularity over the past few years, mostly due to the attractive mix of the Shih Tzu and Chihuahua’s lively personalities.

The Silky Terrier and the Chihuahua make this cute little toy-sized mix. You won’t find them any taller than 10 inches, and will usually weigh around 5-10 pounds. Their thick, silky double coat is often inherited from their parents, and yet their fur isn’t too challenging to groom.

Lively and affectionate, they make great companion dogs. Though, watch out for their stubbornness and aggression if they aren’t trained or socialized. They don’t do well with small children or families that travel or leave the house a lot. If you don’t give the Silkyhuahua enough attention, you can expect a lot of barking or digging behaviors starting to develop. Make sure to give them lots of love.

Toxirn: Cairn Terrier Chihuahua Mix

Cairn Terrier Chihuahua Mix
Cairn Terrier mixed with Chihuahua gives you a Toxirn.

Even though the name doesn’t include Chihuahua, it’s still a mix of the Chi and the Cairn Terrier. They are very loyal dogs and will develop a strong bond with you. Depending on how and when you train them, this could get out of hand as they can be territorial.

Although not too fond of strangers – they will be especially fond of you. They only have the best intentions when protecting you. Just make sure to socialize them young, so they aren’t so protective around strange dogs or people. The Toxirn will be a tiny lap dog and won’t grow taller than 10 inches, and weigh no more than 6-8 pounds.

  4. Why not just get a Chihuahua? Terrible what people are doing creating these designer breeds. Most of the time you can guarantee the parents have not been health tested. Get a Chihuahua from a reputable breeder who can show Health testing and spends money to breed their dogs. A good breeder doesn’t just breed what’s in their backyard or create new breeds! Chihuahuas are prone to heart problems, patella issues and more. So are the other breeds. Know what you are buying! You could be in for a big vet bill.
