Parent Breeds

The Chihuahua Husky mix is a deliberate crossbreed created when a Siberian Husky and a Chihuahua are intentionally bred together. Both parents will be purebred, and the process is completed by artificial insemination. This is not a pairing that would happen naturally.

Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky
Thanks to its standout look, the Siberian Husky is a popular parent breed for many designer dogs.

The Siberian Husky is a breed known for having luxurious and strikingly marked coats and high intelligence. They are amazingly loyal, intelligent dogs who are very energetic, extremely affectionate, and love to play. A medium-sized dog usually averages around 35 to 60 pounds. Huskies have a healthy lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

This breed has a thick, warm fur coat with a softer underlayer and coarser exterior. This coat helps them stay warm in colder climates. Huskies are one of the rare dog breeds known for surviving in extremely chilly weather. This breed does well in warmer weather as well.

The Husky is known for the distinctive coloring of their coats, which come in many colors. These shades include black, white, brown, gray, sable, red, and what is known as wolf coloring (agouti). The similarity in appearance to a wolf is one of the things that makes Huskies an attractive breed to pet lovers. They also are known for having heterochromia, a condition where they can inherit differently colored eyes.

Huskies require a lot of attention, need regular brushing/grooming, and can be quite destructive if they do not get enough exercise. This type of dog rarely barks but loves to howl, just like the wolves they resemble.

Overall, Siberian Huskies are incredibly healthy dogs. They can be prone to hip dysplasia as well as eye conditions. These include corneal dystrophy, juvenile cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy.

Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are one of the most popular small breeds.

Chihuahuas are known for being the smallest breed of dogs in the world. They have a big reputation for their distinctive, yippy bark and huge personalities. These dogs are small in size but big in attitude, and they let everyone know it.

Chihuahuas range from 6 to 10 pounds, some smaller and some larger. They live for about 15 to 20 years. Chihuahuas can be short (smooth) or long-haired. They have large, pointed ears with apple or deer-shaped heads.

Chihuahuas can be hard to train and may get aggressive if unruly behavior is not corrected. This breed is tricky because it is tiny yet very assertive, leading pet owners to let the behaviors slide rather than correct them.

These small yet mighty little dogs are balls of energy and love to play. They need to be careful around other, larger dogs and when on adventures at the park or in nature. Their small size means they can get hurt easily. Chihuahuas are healthy dogs generally but will require regular attention and medical care.

Chihuahuas are a breed known for cardiac concerns like mitral valve disease and patent ductus arteriosus. They are also prone to eye conditions and dental issues later in life. Other health concerns include patellar luxation, a floating kneecap condition common in smaller dogs, and a condition called a molera. This condition happens when the skull does not fuse properly, resulting in a soft spot located at the top of the head.

Breeding The Chihuahua Husky Mix

One of the first questions asked about this unique mixed canine is how its existence is even possible, given the size difference between the two breeds. The mix is not made through traditional mating. The processes of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and artificial insemination (AI) make this unique pairing possible.

The Siberian Husky is always the mother, as Chihuahuas are far too small to carry a Siberian Husky puppy.

Temperament

This particular canine mix brings together what may be the spunkiest dog breed and one of the most affectionate. This mix means a dog with extremely high energy and an extraordinarily strong personality. He will be quite intelligent, loving, opinionated, curious, and stubborn.

Chihuahuas tend to want to be in charge and have prominent personalities despite their small size. Huskies are full of energy and crave attention. These Chihuahua mixes can be a handful, and owners may want to investigate different training options to help demonstrate and instill proper behavior.

Size & Appearance

The appearance of this designer breed is unpredictable due to the significant differences in parents. Size can be anywhere from 6 to about 15 pounds. They will stand around 5 to 15 or more inches high. Most specialty breeders work on breeding dogs that look like miniature Huskys. They are much smaller but have wolf-like markings and sometimes multicolored eyes.

This breed has much shorter legs, like a Chihuahua, and a mix of personality and physical traits from each parent’s pedigree. They may look like either parents or any variation of the two. Check with your breeder to learn more and see what their previous puppies looked like.

Coat & Colors

The Huskychi will have a thick, smooth coat, short to medium length. The colors may vary from black, gray, white, brown, tan, and multicolored. This breed can inherit any number of traits from either breed, so there will be a range of coats and blends of colors that this mix can have. Many will have double or tri-colored coats.

Colors of coat include:

  • Tan
  • Brown
  • White
  • Black
  • Gray
  • Silver
  • Agouti
  • Red
  • Copper
  • Sable
  • Chocolate

Exercise & Living

This crossbreed needs regular exercise but will not be as active as the Husky side of the family. Both parent breeds are active dogs, so expect to spend time every day making sure the little guy gets plenty of time and space to explore. Opportunities for both indoor and outdoor playtime are best to keep him healthy. These little guys are small enough to get a good amount of energy released with inside play.

One thing to remember is that he may get hot quickly with his thicker coat. Try to walk and exercise in the cooler hours in the morning or evening. Your pup will need at least an hour of playtime every day. He will want both free playtime and time for walking and exploring.

Chihuahua Huskies will need a lot of attention, and they crave it. Due to their smaller size, they are good dogs to have for smaller homes and apartments but will get impatient and destructive if they are not kept entertained.

These are not dogs that should be kept outside long term. They love to be around humans and are too small to be left outside unattended. Due to the yippy yappy nature of Chihuahuas and the howling nature of Huskies, they may be a bit noisy at times. If you live in an apartment or have noise-sensitive neighbors, keep this in mind.

Training

Training this unique breed of dog may be challenging. They are very smart and clever but demand a lot of attention and can develop a big attitude. Obedience training may be a worthwhile investment, these dogs tend to think they are the boss, and they often try to mentally get the best of their humans.

Whatever method you choose to train your puppy, stick with it. Consistency and repetition are key. Keep trying and ask for professional help if you need it. The older they get, the better pups will listen and behave, but the training needs to start early and stay reliable.

Socializing your pup with other dogs is part of training. He needs to know how to behave around other dogs and the proper ways to interact with humans. Because of their unbelievably cute appearance, Chihuahua Huskies get a lot of attention, and you want them to be able to handle it and not bite or lash out at anyone.

Health

Regular exercise, attention, top-quality medical care, and well-balanced meals will help keep your pup healthy for years to come. Crossbreeds are often thought to be healthier than many others due to the very purebred nature of their genetics.

Because the Chi Husky is a rare, uncommon breed, they can have similar health problems to both parent breeds. Check with your veterinarian or breeder if you have concerns about the risk of different diseases. Diseases and health conditions the Chi Husky are at risk for include:

Both breeds are susceptible to issues with eye and ear care. Take care to keep their ears clean and clean any discharge from their eyes.

This breed has an expected lifespan of 12 to 16 years.

Nutrition

Your Chihuahua Husky mix will need to be fed a well-balanced diet. High-quality dog food is vital. The brands with natural ingredients are better than those with many additives and substitutes. Talk with your veterinarian about the different supplements that may benefit your pup.

Be careful not to overfeed your dog. You want him to stay at a healthy weight, so avoid excessive treats and snacks. Look for foods with fresh ingredients like fish, chicken, fruits, and vegetables. Lean protein, low-fat, nutrient-rich dog foods will serve his needs best.

Grooming

With a wolf-like coat, this breed needs regular brushing and grooming. Grooming is a perfect way to bond with your little guy, and he will appreciate the attention. He needs brushing between grooming sessions because of his longer, thicker fur.

Plan to brush your dog at least once a week. More is better. Depending on your dog’s unique coat, twice a week or even three times will keep his fur smooth, soft, and silky. Regular brushing prevents matting, stops painful hair clumps, and keeps your pup feeling good.

You can bathe and groom your pup at home. However, the groomer will have a better time, and professional attention may be needed a few times a year to keep his coat in top condition. Try to spring for a professional groomer at least once every three or four months. Also, keep in mind your pup will need his nails trimmed regularly.

Breeders & Puppy Costs

A Chi Husky is a rare, specialty breed of dog. This means that it will cost a lot more than some other breeds. Expect to pay $1,000 to $3,000 or more. Always make sure you are working with a reputable, responsible breeder.

Along with the initial cost of adopting a new puppy, many supplies must be purchased right away. These include supplies like an adjustable crate, training pads, treats, toys, beds, collars, leashes, harnesses, and more. It is normal to spend a few hundred to a thousand dollars to get your new puppy set up in comfort and style.

As Family Pets

The Chihuahua Husky mix is a beautiful dog. They can make very agreeable pets. With a highly intelligent, sassy personality, they are fun companions. These dogs make excellent pets. However, they may not always do well with small children or other animals due to being excitable or overly assertive. Of course, this will all depend on your particular pup. Just be ready for some stubbornness and learn to pick your battles with any new puppy.

The Chi Husky is a spunky, intelligent, beautiful dog that will be a treasured addition to any family. The smaller stature with Husky markings is a gorgeous combination, making these little guys the center of attention everywhere they go.

Whenever bringing a new pet home, it pays to do the research. This breed may not be suitable for everyone due to the high price tag, grooming, training needs, and other extra care. It is always good to learn about a particular breed before adoption. You can check with your local veterinarian or with a breeder to learn more about this breed’s specific temperament and genetic history. Remember, there are some unknowns, and you may not get to see your pet’s entire personality or behavior tendencies until they are fully grown.

Please don’t buy a Chi husky, I know they may look cute, but these animals are so unhealthy. These two breeds aren’t meant to be mixed. They are born sick and fragile, 80% of them are being selled by bad breeders who just want money and don’t vacinate them, or care about them. Their mother is treated awfully, and the puppies that don’t get sold get drowned. Please dont buy them and stop these sick making businesses.
