Buyer’s Guide

Small Dog in Harness on Beach
There are multiple factors you’ll want to consider before buying a harness for your Dachshund.

With their long and low-slung body type, shopping for harnesses and other equipment for Dachshunds can seem daunting. But looking for the right features can help you narrow down the options and find the proper fit for your dog, and keep them looking and feeling great, too.

Harness Types

Step-in & Overhead: This is the most common type of harness, and it’s the one we would recommend for most Dachshunds because it’s only going to attach around the front of their bodies. It’s going to be the easiest to train with, and the most budget-friendly. They do not, however, offer near as much as support as other types.

Dual Clip: Dual clip harnesses allow you to connect your leash at the front (to prevent pulling) or at the rear, on the backside if it’s more convenient. You can then train your Doxie as you see fit, or based on their own leash training skill level. You can purchase a front or rear clip only harness, but with most high-end manufacturers making dual clip models, it doesn’t make much sense to do so.

Lift: Lift harnesses are for pups that have recently had surgery, or have had an injury. These can be helpful for older Doxies as well. They should not be used for regular walks unless your dog is injured or older, and needs the additional support.

No-Pull Features

Because Dachshunds are likely to have back issues because of their breed, comfort is a priority when selecting a product. Purebreed doxies can sustain back injuries easier than other dogs because of their genetics, but other diseases like hypothyroidism are also common.

Depending on your dog’s age and skeletal structure, he could develop disc problems from regular activities like jumping and climbing. Regardless of whether your pup already has a health problem, buying a harness that irritates his back increases the odds of developing issues.

A no-pull leash is ideal, especially for puppies, as you want leash walking to be as gentle as possible for your little pup. We recommend harnesses over any type of collar and leash combination, as Doxies are known for injuring themselves when they are only trained with collars.

Padding and Anti-Chafing Materials

Dachshunds tend to have short hair. Not all do though, so looking for lightly padded and anti-chafing harnesses is a good idea. Depending on your pup’s coat, a bit of padding can make the difference between a comfortable walk and sores that last for weeks.

Purchasing a no-pull style helps avoid spine issues. Padding will also help if your dog decides not to obey while on a walk. You don’t want to let your dog get away with whatever it wants. But you also don’t want to put additional strain on his body while trying to keep him safe.

Adjustability

Your Dachshund is long and lean, which is a relatively uncommon body type in dogs. Highly adjustable harnesses are easier to manage for a Dachshund. Look for multiple straps with easy adjustments instead of one-size neck measurements or single-strap designs.

Wrangling your pup into a harness with too many straps can also be frustrating. So, a balance between adjustability and ease of use is helpful. A step-in design might be easier for calmer dogs, but one which goes on over their backs might be easier for most Dachshunds.

Budget

Budget is always a factor. While money may not be an issue for some Dachshund owners, we still like to be aware that dogs are expensive. Dachshunds are no different. You’ll need to have enough set aside in your budget for Doxie dog toys, dog crates (even if small), Dachshund dog food, unexpected vet bills, and more. In the review below, you’ll find great options at every price point.

Our Favorite Harnesses For Dachshunds

Doxie Pup Outdoors Standing
Below are our favorite picks for Doxies of all shapes and sizes.

With dozens of dog harnesses on the market, it can be difficult to know which ones are best for Dachshunds. As mentioned, their elongated bodies make them uniquely difficult to find the perfect model that offers the right fit. Because of all the models available, we’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you and compiled a comprehensive list of our favorite harnesses available on the market today.

RUFFWEAR Web Master Dog Harness

Ruffwear Webmaster Dog Harness
  • Longer length is perfect for Dachshunds.
  • Extremely secure with multiple straps.
  • Three different colors.
  • Five different size options.
  • Durable construction to withstand abuse.
  • Padding for additional comfort.
  • Five different adjustment points.

This harness has more back coverage and three adjustable straps. This means RUFFWEAR’s Web Master will give your Doxie pressure distribution to help avoid back problems. Instead of tugging on your dog’s neck or back, you can control where they go by gently redirecting their entire body.

A built-in handle allows you to assist your injured or elderly pup. If you drive frequently, this can help keep him secure in your vehicle. Reinforced straps maintain security while ample padding keeps your dog comfortable. There’s even padding along the belly straps to prevent rubbing and make all-day wear possible.

This option is a bit pricier than the alternatives on our list. However, it’s a full-coverage option for dogs who need more guidance while on walks (or help around the house). And if your dog is a service pup or has other patches to wear, there are plenty of areas to affix them with this professional-looking harness.

We love that this harness has five points of adjustment to allow for a custom fit.  It has a reinforced handle that allows you to help your dog over obstacles (and buckle up in the car).  It has reflective trim that makes your pup visible in dark conditions and the additional belly strap helps prevent escapes.

RUFFWEAR Doubleback Dog Harness

Ruffwear Doubleback
  • Designed for extreme use.
  • Ideal for outdoor use.
  • Made for rock climbing.
  • The longer length is great for Dachshunds.
  • Extremely secure construction.
  • Seven different adjustment points.
  • Pads and leg loops provide additional support.

The title states that RUFFWEAR’s harness is for belaying and hiking, and it is a bit more expensive than the others because of that. But in terms of support and comfort for your Dachshund, the extra-secure harness is ideal for dogs who need help climbing or jumping.

If you like to adventure a lot but recognize that your Doxie’s physical limitations are keeping her from having fun, this harness could be a great solution. Seven adjustment points allow you to fully customize the fit, and the buckles are durable anodized aluminum.

Even though it’s a heavy-duty harness aimed at backpackers and hikers (pups included), the Doubleback harness has padding along the belly support and leg loops to prevent rubbing and pinching. Multiple tie-in points are perfect for actual rock-climbing scenarios but also provide options for leashing and buckling into the car.

We love that the seven adjustment points allow you to achieve a perfect doxie fit.  The heavy-duty materials and buckles prevent tearing and chewing.  Padded belly support helps keep your pup comfortable and the built-in storage pack tucks away the leg straps when not in use.

Chai's Choice Reflective Harness

Chais Choice Harness Red
  • Harness with the best overall value.
  • Reflective stitching for low light walks.
  • Rear handle for additional control.
  • Front and rear metal attachment points.
  • Padding for additional comfort.
  • Chest is made with breathable mesh.
  • Four different adjustment points.

This durable nylon harness is great for active pups. With a longer length, it meets most Doxie fit requirements. Longer dogs will have coverage along their backs, and the polyester material isn’t as bulky as some alternatives.

D-rings in the front and back provide for leash fit and tag attachment, and the built-in handle gives you a way to grab onto your pup easily. The body of the harness is soft enough to remain comfortable with prolonged wear. It’s also reflective, making it the perfect choice for Doxie owners that walk at night or in the early morning.

There are four different adjustment points to ensure your pup has the perfect fit. And as one of the most budget-friendly choices, this is a great pick for puppies and still-growing Doxies, too.

We love that secure straps prevent dogs from easily wiggling out.  The wide adjustability range helps accommodate different sizes & body types.  The built-in handle is ideal for assisting your dog over obstacles and buckling up in the car, especially when using the easy buckle straps.

Gooby Perfect Fit Harness

Gooby Dog Harness
  • Budget-friendly.
  • Step-in design.
  • Discourages pulling.
  • Four different size options.
  • Six different color choices.
  • Two adjustment points.
  • Easy to put on and take off.

Gooby concentrates on comfort (and style) with their Perfect Fit X harness. For small dogs who do well on a leash and don’t need extra support  the Perfect Fit X is comfy and streamlined. There’s no handle though, which is worth noting if you want extra control.

It fits your dog’s chest area only. There are no extra straps or belly coverage. The harness forms an X shape and has simple size adjustments and one closure buckle. The smallest size accommodates dogs with a chest circumference of 12 inches. If your Doxie is super tiny, this might be a good choice.

On most Dachshunds, the fit is well below the trachea area. This ensures your dog won’t choke themselves or otherwise have breathing issues even if they tug on the leash. Dual D-rings and no handle keep the design trim. You may have trouble buckling your dog in the car unless you purchase an attachment for the seatbelt.

We love the synthetic lambskin strap material for a snug fit.  It accommodates dogs with chests as small as 13 inches and has a range of color options for visibility. The step-in design makes sure it goes on easily, and it lies below the neck to prevent trachea sensitivity.

Voyager Step-In Air Dog Harness

Voyager Dog Harness Pink
  • Also budget-friendly.
  • Five different color choices.
  • Five different size options.
  • Two sturdy D rings for leash attachment.
  • Made with high-quality breathable fabric.
  • Padded for additional comfort.
  • Quick-release buckles for easy on & off.

A lightweight all-seasons harness, Voyager’s Step-In Air fits even the tiniest of Dachshunds. It fits a 13-inch chest size at the smallest size and delivers barely-there comfort. Size adjustments are minimal. Because of the Velcro closure and buckle overlay, so this may not be the right pick for Doxies that like to escape.

But if you are looking for an affordable option that won’t irritate your Dachshund’s sensitive skin or airways, this low-lying harness might be the perfect fit. Mesh fabric enhances airflow and keeps your pup comfortable in all seasons. Just keep in mind that this fabric is also susceptible to chewing.

The step-in design is simple to get on your dog, and there are no complicated straps to twist or rub. Double D-rings provide added security when going on walks, though this model may not work for Dachshunds who pull a lot; it lacks reinforcement in many areas. There’s also a plush Voyager Step-In option for extra-pampered pets.

We love that this budget-friendly pick has a range of color options that make this fashionable harness look good.  Its streamlined construction sheds any unwanted bulk or features that might weigh your dog down.  It also lies below the trachea so it doesn’t impact breathing.

Sporn Mesh No-Pull Harness

Sporn Small Dog Harness
  • Budget-friendly.
  • Veterinarian approved.
  • Patented system.
  • Four different size options.
  • Three different colors.
  • More flexibility than traditional harnesses.
  • Ergonomically structured.

The Sporn Non-Pull Mesh Dog Harness is a unique design. It’s specifically designed to attach to the front of your dog and discourage pulling behavior. The harness “gives” more than other types and allows your pup to have a bit more of a free-range motion.

The best part about the anti-pull design is the fact that it does not choke your pup, even when pulling. It discourages them by tightening around the body, not the neck. The design and padding are also great at preventing chafing and rubbing after longer walks.

The step-in design is easy to put on and take off. The mesh chest piece also maximizes breathability for your pup. It’s made with high-quality and durable nylon, which means your investment won’t go to waste after multiple walks or outings with your pup.

We love the unique design of the Sporn harness. It’s simple, and effective. It’s also extremely budget-friendly, which is important if you are trying to save a few bucks while you outfit your pup.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are dog harnesses good or bad for Dachshunds?

Dog harnesses are actually very good for Dachshunds. Specifically harnesses that have padding which will ensure your pup is comfortable. Padded harnesses are great for longer walks around the neighborhood or jaunts at the dog park. You'll want to make sure you have the right fit, and the right materials for your Doxie pup.

  • Can Dachshunds be harness trained due to their body type?

Yes, they can. You'll need to look at harness products that fit their body correctly. You'll need to find a model that's slightly longer, or a vest style harness that only covers the front of their body. This way, you aren't putting pressure on their lungs which can impact their breathing during walks.

  • What type of harness is the best for Dachshunds?

Any type of harness will work. It's just a matter of making sure the fitment is correct so that the harness doesn't restrict airflow by putting too much pressure on your dog's lungs or chest.

  • Is a harness or collar better for my Dachshund?

We prefer harnesses over collars for Doxies, but also for all dogs, in general. For breeds that pull, no-pull options work very well. The problem with leash training on a collar is that dogs can be susceptible to tracheal damage in their throat if they pull hard and fast enough. The perfect harness will alleviate that.

  • When should I start harness training my puppy?

You can start training your Doxie as soon as you'd like, as long as it's in your own backyard. If you want to take them out into the world, you'll want to get clearance by your vet for your puppy to be outdoors.

Typically this happens after their third set of booster shots. Consult with your veterinarian to be sure. Once you've gotten the green light, you can take your dog on walks out into your neighborhood, or the local park.

  • Can Dachshunds run while wearing a harness?

If you’re new to Dachshund ownership, you might wonder whether your new pup’s stubby little legs will keep him from running far or fast. The short answer is yes, Dachshunds can run—and fast enough to escape from you if their harness fails. They have it in their blood to chase small critters, so keep that in mind.

So while you may enjoy an adventurous lifestyle, your dog’s health depends on gentle walks, strict rules about jumping down from the furniture, and gentle handling whether leash walking or carrying your Dachshund.

Final Thoughts

Dachshunds are hard to buy for when it comes to accessories like harnesses and clothing. With their elongated bodies and narrow profiles, fitting a harness can be frustrating. When you consider the potential for spine problems with the wrong type of harness or habits, shopping for your Doxie becomes serious business.

Fortunately, there are solutions even for the longest and skinniest of Dachshunds. In terms of fit, most of us look for something with a slightly longer design to accommodate your Doxie’s unusual body shape.

If your dog has existing spine problems or has had surgery, you should consult your vet before trying any new equipment. For most Dachshund owners, a harness is a significant improvement over a collar.

For both adjustable fit and usability (the buckles are simple to operate), Chai’s Choice wins our vote. It’s budget-friendly, and allows you flexibility with your pup as they grow. It’s one of the better harnesses you can purchase when analyzing the cost/quality ratio.

  1. Thank you for this very informative article. This makes shopping for a new harness for my puppy much easier. I have a couple of harnesses now but they do not fit properly and this helps to narrow down a selection.
