Call of the Wild

Call of the Wild, by Jack London Book
I really loved the book 'Call of the Wild'. It depicted the strong bond between a man and his animal and how unconditional their love for one another can end up. It was sad to see all of the pain that Buck was put through, but when in the end he got his 'just reward', it seemed like his efforts were not in vain. I give the book 2 thumbs up! (from a 12 year-old reader)

Call of the Wild and white fang Cliffs Notes

love that dog

Love That Dog by Sharon Creech, Newbery Award Winner!
From a 10 yr. old Amazon.com Customer: Love that Dog is about a boy named Jack who had a dog that died, and now he is writing in his poem journal, but he believes that poetry is not for boys.
This is a book of humor and poetry, similar to Amelia's Notebook and a Shel Silverstein book combined. The author writes this way because emotions are better expressed in poetry than in prose. It is for young readers who like poetry. This is a very good book by a very good author. Ages 9-12

Old Yeller
Old Yeller, by Fred Gipson Book
The great old classic story about a stray yellow labrador who becomes a member of the family. When a novel like Huckleberry Finn, or The Yearling, comes along it defies customary adjectives because of the intensity of the respouse it evokes in the reader. Such a book, we submit, is Old Yeller; to read this eloIquently simple story of a boy and his dog in the Texas hill country is an unforgettable and deeply moving experience. (Ages 9-12)

Incredible Journey

The Incredible Journey, by Sheila Burnford Book
Instinct told them that the way home lay to the west. And so the doughty young Labrador retriever, the roguish bull terrier and the indomitable Siamese set out through the Canadian wilderness. Separately, they would soon have died. But, together, the three house pets faced starvation, exposure, and wild forest animals to make their way home to the family they love. The Incredible Journey is one of the great children's stories of all time--and has been popular ever since its debut in 1961. (Ages 9-12)

Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound VHS
Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon
