The
2008 Olympics

Sports for Dogs
Animated running dog.

The Olympics games can be traced back to the year 776 B.C. in the city of Olympia in Greece. They continued for more than a thousand years until the Emperor Theodosius ordered that they be stopped. They didn't start up again until 1924.

Now, we celebrate the summer or winter Olympic games every two years. At the Olympics, athletes from all over the world come together in peace to participate in a variety of sports.

The young people that compete in the Olympics are very healthy. They have worked hard for many years to compete against other athletes.

There are no Olympics for dogs, but they do have opportunities to compete in sports. Participating in these sports can be fun for your dog and will also keep him healthy. On this page we will celebrate, in photos, a few of the active sports in which dogs can participate.

There are many other activities for dogs, including carting, hiking, and backpacking. They all provide good exercise and fun for dogs. Many of these activities have competitions in which you can compete, but most people just do them to get exercise and have fun with their dogs.

Totally Fun Things to Do With Your Dog
Totally Fun Things to Do With Your Dog (Play With Your Pet) by Maxine A. Rock, 1998
Here's a book that gives ideas and step-by-step instructions for dozens of fun and safe games and activities to do with your dog: from playing basketball, Frisbee, and hide and seek, to jumping through hoops, taking photographs, creating unusual dog houses, and throwing dog theme parties. Written for kids ages 9-12
Kids + Dogs = Fun
Kids + Dogs = Fun (Great Activities Your Kids and Dogs Can Do Together), by Jacqueline O'Neil, Howell Book House 1996
This is a good book for kids interested in dog-related activities. There are two questionnaires that help evaluate children's interests. Discussed are 13 activities, including 4-H, the AKC Canine Good Citizen program, raising puppies to be service dogs, hunting tests, and more. Lots of photos.
